Chapter 41

The atmosphere in the G-Pharma conference room was optimistic. The board of directors had just heard an overview from Sean Young. The breakthrough he had presented fired up their imaginations. It became clear to them that their investment in G-Pharma was close to putting their names in the Midas Touch Hall of Fame.

“Although we do not need further funding at this stage, I’m sure you all realize an additional fifty million dollars could help us set up parallel development teams. This would allow us to simultaneously go to market with several drugs and become the world’s leading company in the field of cancer treatment.” Young was determined to take advantage of the board members’ excitement.

Someone at the far end of the room raised his hand. Young looked at the man questioningly. He had never seen him before.

“Allow me to introduce myself, Dr. Young, as you weren’t present at the beginning of this discussion. My name is Wyatt Robinson, and I am a managing partner in the RK Biomed Investments fund. I am filling in for my partner, Roland King, who was unable to attend this meeting due to personal reasons.”

“Welcome to the board of directors,” Young greeted him with cold disdain. He had always had a deep dislike of arrogant moneyed men.

“It is not every day that one comes upon such an ingenious breakthrough.” The investor ignored the hostile tone of Young’s greeting. “Perhaps you could share with us the inspiration that led you to the discovery and development of this idea. After all, we all sit on the boards of several companies. If there’s something we could learn to the advantage of our various companies — on the principle level, of course, without getting into specific details — we’d love to hear it.”

“This is a problem my staff and I have been grappling with for close to a year. There was never a single Eureka-like moment of discovery. It was merely the result of arduous Herculean work and an attentiveness to the minutest of details.”

“Very interesting. I’ve never encountered such inspired genius that resulted only from hard work.” Wyatt feigned naïveté.

Young bit his lip, holding himself back from simply leaving the table and the conference room. “When brilliant minds work hard together I guess they end up getting results.”

“And when exactly did you know you were in the possession of the solution you’ve just introduced to us?”

“About three months ago,” Young answered flatly.

Wyatt pursed his lips in mock surprise. “And it’s only now you see fit to update us?”

All pretense of civility was gone from Young’s face. “I preferred to test the effectiveness and accuracy of the solution several times, not wanting to give rise to false hopes among the esteemed members of this group. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I should be heading back to my laboratory to continue the work for which you have invested in this company.” Without waiting for a response, Young rose and left the room.

“I’m new here,” said Robinson, “but what just happened seems highly unusual.
